Appreciating the commitment of licensees in reporting and covering the situation created by the outbreak of COVID-19, the Independent Media Commission (IMC) invites all media to keep contributing professionally in covering developments regarding this situation. The role of the media in covering such events, as our country is facing COVID-19, is essential and IMC therefore appreciates the commitment of all journalists and Audiovisual Media Service Providers (AMSP), who contribute to fair information of public, encouraging all journalists to do their job as professionally as possible.
As the role of the media in informing the public is of particular importance even in this emergency situation, IMC instructs all AMSP to ensure during reporting that the broadcasted information is dulyverified and based on official information, thus acting according to the professional standards of journalism. We also instruct you to respect the privacy of individuals affected by the COVID-19 virus, and the basis for this is the Code of Ethics for AMSP.
Proper information of citizens aiming at educating them about the treatment of COVID-19, including taking preventive measures; safeguards and guidelines regarding health and hygiene protection against this virus is of a particular importance during this period. Such reports should be based on experts in the field or competent organizations, in order not to cause panic and concern among the citizens of the country.
IMC highly estimates the commitment of every journalist and medium, putting yourself at risk, with the sole purpose of being at the service of the public.
We hope this pandemic ends as soon as possible.
